Dignity: Art as a Lens for Social Justice

This exhibition centers on the theme of dignity, taking inspiration from Robert E. Dorksen’s 1972 black and white photograph titled Dignity, as a conceptual starting point. Rooted in Niagara University’s Catholic and Vincentian mission, this exhibition affirms the fundamental belief that every human being possesses inherent worth. At the same time, it challenges viewers to confront the social, cultural, and historical forces that have obscured, denied, or suppressed this recognition.

The selected works come from CAM’s superb permanent collection and include artists such as Barbara Kruger, Reginald Marsh, Norman Rockwell, Milton Rogovin, Cindy Sherman, and Nancy Spero. These works engage with diverse aspects of identity, including ability, race, culture, socio-economic status, religion, and gender. Each piece invites reflection on the complex ways dignity has been questioned, impeded, and withheld.

At the same time, each of these artworks affirm the enduring struggle for recognition and the power of justice. Together, this exhibition offers viewers a compelling exploration of justice through the lens of contemporary and historical experience.
