Art History & Museum Studies Program
Offered in partnership with Niagara University, the Art History with Museum Studies (AHM) program combines the academic study of art history with hands-on training in museum work. Students explore art, culture, and museum practices through coursework and real-world experience at the Castellani Art Museum and beyond.
Program Highlights
- Academic focus on art history, visual culture, and museum studies
- Professional training in curatorship, education, collections, and administration
- Experiential learning through internships and exhibition-based courses
- Opportunities for independent research and senior projects
- Taught by faculty with deep professional experience in the field
Student Curated Exhibitions
Each year, Niagara University students in the Art History with Museum Studies program have the opportunity to curate original exhibitions at CAM as part of their coursework. These hands-on experiences give students practical training in exhibition development—from research and design to writing and installation.
Featured Courses
- Introduction to Museum Studies (AHM252A): Students explore the history, roles, and functions of museums while developing and presenting a collaborative exhibition.
- Exhibiting Cultures (AHM357A): Focused on folk art and cultural representation, this course guides students through fieldwork, interview techniques, and exhibit production, culminating in a student-designed exhibition.
Scholarships
The Dr. Gerald C. Mead, Jr. Endowed Scholarship supports outstanding juniors and seniors in the program who demonstrate academic excellence and dedication to the museum field.
“The AHM program gave me the skills and support to launch my museum career—especially through hands-on experience with the collection and close work with CAM staff.”
"The CAM is an amazing, significant place... On any given day you'll see students working on assignments, touring with their classes or attending lectures and panels held at the museum."
“The AHM program gave me real-world experience in a museum setting, broad exposure to careers in the field, and a strong foundation in art history—all of which made me feel ready for what’s next.”
