From Decay to Display: Conserved Works from the Collection offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the art and science of preservation. Featuring works from the Castellani Art Museum’s collection that have undergone professional conservation, the exhibition reveals how paintings, sculptures, and works on paper are stabilized, cleaned, and restored for public view. Through before-and-after images, conservation documentation, and newly conserved artworks, visitors will gain insight into the expertise, care, and technical processes that help ensure the long-term survival of cultural heritage.

Museums serve as stewards of the past, preserving works of art not only for today’s audiences but also for future generations. Conservation is an essential investment that protects the historical, artistic, and educational value of collections while respecting the integrity of each object. The exhibition features a diverse range of conserved works, from a tempera painting by Italian artist Giacomo Balla to a print by American artist Mary Cassatt. A highlight of the exhibition is a large painting of the American and Horseshoe Falls attributed to Canadian artist Robert Reginald Whale. Donated to the museum in 1979, the painting remained in storage for decades and had never been exhibited due to its condition. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the restored work alongside video documentation of its conservation process. The exhibition also includes conservation footage of a monumental 1873 painting of Niagara University by Danish artist Ferdinand Richardt, offering a deeper understanding of the meticulous work involved in preserving significant works of art.
