Painting Niagara, Thomas Kegler

May 7, 2017 - Jan 21, 2018

Overview

From May 7, 2017 through January 21, 2018, the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University hosted Painting Niagara, Thomas Kegler. Harkening back to the Hudson River School of painting, artist and educator Thomas Kegler lent his Niagara, Psalms 84:11, an eight foot panoramic painting of the Horseshoe Falls of Niagara, anchoring the exhibition. The quiet and contemplative works in this exhibition include 15 plein air paintings and related studies as well as works from the Castellani Art Museum collection.

Excerpts from the most comprehensive instructional documentary video ever made on the landscape painting techniques of “indirect painting” used by the old masters was also included in the exhibition. This ground-breaking film presented the creation of Niagara, Psalms 84:11 over a period of two years. Over 40 drawings and paintings laid the groundwork in preparation for this expansive work.

Niagara, Psalms 84:11 endeavors to share the beauty of one of the world’s great natural wonders while evoking awareness and concern for the fragility of our natural environment.

A presentation by Kegler, Buffalo/Niagara Riverkeeper and the WNY Land Conservancy occurred in Fall 2017, entitled: Why Restore the Niagara Gorge?

A presentation on the connection between spirituality and the Niagara Falls and River occurred in fall 2019, featuring a panel discussion including Thomas Kegler, entitled: The Spirituality of Niagara Falls, Vincentian Heritage Week 2019.
